Making your own glitter lip gloss puts a frugal spin on a glamorous product. Who doesn't want to look gorgeous and still keep some money in their pocket? With homemade glitter gloss you know that the ingredients are toxin free and cruelty free because you made it yourself. When you create your own glitter lip gloss, you are making a statement that you are someone who wants to look good and still cares about the environment. To start, you can use stuff you may have lying around the house or you can opt for a more natural gloss made with beeswax.

Tips & Warnings

If you use a recycled container for your glitter lip gloss, remove all traces of the original product. Clean and sterilize it either by boiling it or cleaning it out with rubbing alcohol. Think about going organic with the ingredients that you use for your lip gloss. Your health food store or an online herb shop will carry organic products for your lip gloss. The beeswax and shea butter gloss will have a firmer texture than the petroleum gloss.

Only use cosmetic grade beeswax. In fact, be sure that you only use cosmetic glitter and food grade products in your lip gloss.

Lip Care
Most beauty stores sell those tiny round tins or plastic containers with lids that screw on, much like the children's lip gloss come in, and you can usually buy them in bulk for just a few dollars. Using sugar-free, pre-sweetened Kool-Aid (Strawberry-Kiwi makes a nice light color, while Cherry makes a darker red) and mixing a small amount of the powder color of choice with inexpensive petroleum jelly, and you have a nice flavored lip gloss.
TIP: Mix the powder thoroughly to avoid lumps and clumps and make an even shade. These make great gifts for teenagers and young girls, and even have a great flavor!
Beets are a nice, deep, rich, dark reddish color to a dark purple, and the juice from a beet will stain for quite some time. If you want a long lasting color on your lips, mash the juice from either fresh or canned beets (the canned variety are easier to mash), and then using a cotton swab, carefully outline the shape of your lips with the beat juice and then color in the rest of your lips. This will provide long lasting color that will stay on through eating, swimming, sweating - you name it!
If the color is too dark, mixing with a little petroleum jelly will lighten the color and provide some gloss, or you can mix with melted beeswax for less gloss but a smoother, easier to apply beet lip color.
TIP: The beet juice stains very easily, so be careful not to get any outside the line of the lip, or it will be very difficult to remove this quickly.
Vitamin E capsules can provide many skin care benefits, one of which is a great lip gloss that moisturizes and protects your lips will providing a light gloss. Simply cut or poke the end of a vitamin E capsule and squeeze for the oil to come out, and apply directly with your finger or a cotton swab.
Skin Care

Ph Balance
Using an inexpensive spray bottle, add one part distilled vinegar to three parts distilled water, and shake vigorously. This works like a Ph toner and skin balancer. You can add essential oil fragrances to add to the therapeutic benefits, such as tea tree oil and lavender, both of which are antibacterial and antimicrobial and have been shown to help with acne control. Spray the mixture on your face or dab a cotton ball into the mixture and smooth evenly on the face.
Hair Care
All natural at home hair care is easier than you think. For a more in depth article specific to hair care, you can read: Natural Hair Care Products - From Your Own Kitchen!
Makeup Remover
Removing eye makeup is easy with a bit of castor oil or mineral oil and a cotton ball. Mineral oil that is unscented is very inexpensive, but particularly if you have oily skin, be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid oil buildup. Honestly, any oil will remove non-waterproof mascara, even plain old vegetable oil, but the one oil that is recommended the most is grape seed oil. Grape seed oil is also the safest and best oil carrier for using essential oils.
Bath Soaks
Epson salts and essential oils make wonderful bath soaks. Depending on the type of therapeutic benefit you seek, you can choose just about any essential oil designed for skin contact. Be sure to read the Dangers of Essential Oils before you select an essential oil for a bath soak. Epson salts can be mixed with essential oils in the bath too.
Dried or powdered milk mixed with oatmeal and added to a warm bath, along with some essential oils for fragrance and relaxation, can provide exceptional and inexpensive dry skin treatment.
Lips
There are several lip staining items lying around your house right now. Four of the best items for staining are beets, kool-aid, Jell-o, and dark colored berries and fruit (such as raspberry, blackberry, and pomegranate). In a pinch you can mash beets and fruits or open a packet of Jell-o or Kool-aid and apply it to your lips by using a Q-tip. For an easier application, you can also mix any of the items with a small amount of petroleum jelly or olive oil. Out of all of the recommendations, using mashed beets will stain your lips the longest because it will stay in place while eating, talking, drinking, etc. Which ever item you decide to try, please remember to watch your teeth when applying it. After all, you don't want to have berry-stained teeth while at work or on a night out.
The kitchen isn't the only place you may find ideas for a new lip stain or lip gloss. One peak into your makeup collection may give you several quick ideas for a stand-in lip product. If you are in search of a gloss, then add an eyeshadow to a little dab of petroleum jelly or Vitamin E, mix together, and add to your lips. If you are in a big hurry and can't find you lipstick, then simply use your favorite blush stick on your lips, such as Clinique's Blushwear Cream Stick (Compare Prices).
Color isn't the only thing you can get from items around your home. If you don’t need a lip color, but you can't find your lip gloss or lip balm then there are easy fixes you can use at home. One of the best lip gloss/balms I have found from at-home products is Vitamin E capsules. If you have these in your home you can poke a small hole in a capsule with a needle and then squeeze a little onto your lips. It gives great moisture, shine, and it's also healthy to boot. Other items you can try in a pinch are petroleum jelly and several oils such as olive oil and grape seed oil.
Eyes
When using products around or on your eyes, you need to be careful and not irritate them. Most of us have liquid food dye, but did you know it also comes in a powder form as well? You can find them at various cooking stores and even some major craft stores. If you already have some you can grab a non-scented baby powder, add a dash of your favorite dry food coloring, and mix together until you get the color you want. You can apply this dry or you can mix a little of the powder mixture with a dab of petroleum jelly or Vitamin E, until you get a nice cream eyeshadow. Since the eyes can be such a sensitive area, I would recommend staying clear of using powdered herbs on your eyes unless you are already aware of whether the herb will not irritate your eye area.
Face
If you are fair-skinned and have ever run out of face powder, then you should have thought of grabbing the un-scented baby powder. Baby powder works wonders with many things cosmetic, and using it as a setting powder is one of them. Simply tap a small amount into your palm and then gently press it into your skin with a makeup puff. If you don't have a puff then you can use cotton balls. Once you apply it, gently buff the remaining powder away so you don't look chalky. As a side note, you can also use baby powder in your hair to absorb excess oil between shampoos.
Cheek color can also be made at home in a pinch. Remember the beets in the "Lips" section? For a quick and easy cheek color, mix a small amount of mashed beets with petroleum jelly or Vitamin E, and mix until smooth. This will work like some of the famous lip/cheek stains, such as Benefit's Benetint (Compare Prices). If you don't feel like mixing things from the kitchen, then grab a lipstick and dab a few dots on your cheeks, then blend for instant color. If you want a powder blush, simply take a small amount of baby powder, and mix it with some eyeshadow scrapings.
