Some Gender Terminology used above comes from the following sources :
Ref letter, reference
Definitions,
(harry s. Benjamin) standards of care the document that outlines the medical and psychiatric standards for working with transsexuals. Major points include (1) three months of therapy before being recommended for hormones; (2) one year of hormone therapy before surgery; (3) one year of cross-living before surgery; and (4) two psychiatric or psychotherapist's evaluations recommending surgery, one of whom must be a psychiatrist, and one of whom must have had an extended therapeutic relationship with the client., f
A.s.srs: alt.support.srs, a usenet newsgroup known more for flame wars than support. Also appropriately abbreviated a.s.s., e
Acceptance- is the holy grail for all transvestites. Every man who dresses as a woman, whether or not he is a genuine transvestite, has a compulsion to be accepted by the world "for what he is." he has no need to worry - if he takes time and trouble with his appearance, then he will often - not always - be accepted as a woman; or at least afforded a certain degree of doubt. Conversely, if he looks like a ridiculous pantomime dame, he will definately be accepted by people as just that. Either way, there is a definate compulsion amongst transvestites to brave the outside world in their new persona. The best advice is to suppress that compulsion until they are certain they are ready to be seen in public., g
Ada: americans with disabilities act: a law passed to ensure the rights of the physically and mentally challenged. Transsexual people were specifically written out of this act. This decision was condemned by some and praised by those who do not see gender variance as a disability., e
Admirer: someone who is attracted to transgender people. Used to describe someone whose sexual orientation leans towards people who are gender-different, and who may be attracted to such a person based on their combination of sex characteristics, or is attracted to the very essence of gender in that person, regardless of their combination of genitals or secondary sexual characteristics., e
Aegis: american educational gender information service, an advocacy group active in the 1990's. Some of their materials are available on gender.org, notably their advisories about medical and cosmetic procedures., e
Agp: see autogynephilia., b
American psychological association (apa) : a us-based professional organization of psychologists (ph.d. Professors and helping professions of mental phenomena). Though this group also includes scientists who do not necessarily advocate pathological terminology, this group is dominated by helping-professionals who endorse the american psychiatric associations model of mental health., e
Androgyne : (androgynous) and (androgyny) person who has gender traits of both masculine and feminine. Lacking of a clear or specified singular gender trait. Person identifies as both genders or neither of the two culturally defined genders; and/or who expresses and/or presents merged culturally / stereotypically feminine and masculine characteristics, or mainly neutral characteristics. May or may not express dual gender identity., a
Androgyne: a person who live without appearing or behaving particularly male or female., e
Androgynous this describes a person who chooses to live on the borderline between male and female, instead of living full-time in a culturally-accepted gender role. This is as good a place as any to mention that lifestyles among the transgendered can be very fluid. People move in either direction according to changing self-image, their degree of comfort with that image, and with other issues that may be unrelated to gender. In particular, movement that seems "backward" needs to be handled with care and compassion. I know of one transsexual who dropped out of transition and stopped taking hormones, after watching two close friends self-destruct when their transitions went badly., f
Androphilia: attraction to males as sexual partners. Often a characteristic of early-transitioning transwomen. Considered a counterpart to "autogynephilia" in some models of gender identity., e
Anti-androgens: also called androgen blockers, these drugs block the effects of testosterone in transwomen., e
Apa : two seperate doctor based associations which have the same 3 letter abreviation. American psychiatric association and american psychological association. Psychiatrists use the "diagnostic and statistical manual" a manual of disorders of the mind. This manual lists both "gender identity disorder" (transsexuality) and "transvestic fetishism" (cross dressing) as mental illnesses., a
Assigned gender role: at birth, an assigned gender is determined by appearance of sexual anatomy. This determines the role a child is raised in either male or female. Documented by a doctor who assists in the birth., a
Attraction, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Many a plain or ugly person has been considered beautiful by at least one person in their life. Generally, heterosexuals find members of the opposite sex attractive, whilst homosexuals find members of their own sex attractive. So whom do transvestites find attractive? The answer is  they themselves! No matter what they look like, transvestites subconsciously try to look like the sort of women they find most attractive, and therefore wish to emulate in appearance. Perhaps that is why many transvestites adopt the slutty look; an echo of the paradoxical heterosexual desire to date sluts but eventually marry a virgin., g
Autogynephilia (controversial term, also agp, and misrepresented as autogyne. I prefer the term male to female crossdreaming). Term coined in 1989 by ray blanchard to refer to "a man's paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman." on this blog i do not necessarily consider the condition a paraphila (see paraphilia). Blanchard operates with four types of autogynephilia: transvestic autogynephilia (at this blog called crossdressing): arousal to the act or fantasy of wearing women's clothing behavioral autogynephilia (at this blog called crossenacting): arousal to the act or fantasy of doing something regarded as feminine physiologic autogynephilia (at this blog called nothing at all): arousal to fantasies of female-specific body functions anatomic autogynephilia (at this blog called crossdreaming): arousal to the fantasy of having a woman's body, or parts of one bdsm (or bondage, domination, sado-masochism) sexuality characterized by the consenual exchange of power. This is echange of power can be either physical (e.g., spanking), psychological (e.g., teasing), or both. Often bdsm involves gender-related play when the partner with power adopt a male role and the partner without power adopts of female role. There are m2f crossdreamers (see crossdreaming) who take part in (or fantasize about) role playing where the dominant is a strong woman or a she-male and where the crossdreamer takes the submissive female role (see shemale)., b
Autogynephilia: a paraphilia proposed in 1989 by ray blanchard, who defined it as "a man's paraphilic tendency to be sexually aroused by the thought or image of himself as a woman." part of a controversial behavioral model for transsexual sexuality informally labeled the blanchard, bailey, and lawrence theory. The model is an attempt to explain transwomen (male-to-female transsexual and transgender persons) who are not exclusively attracted to males, including lesbian (or "gynephilic"), bisexual and asexual transwomen. The model claims that transwomen (called "gender dysphoric males" by blanchard) who are not sexually oriented toward men are instead sexually oriented toward the thought or image of themselves as women. Most of the attention paid to blanchard's work on gender dysphoria focuses on what he calls "nonhomosexual transsexuals" or "autogynephilic transsexuals." he calls those transwomen who are exclusively attracted to males "androphilic" or "homosexual transsexuals." while some transgender people self-identify with this term most transsexuals vehemently oppose it because it does not apply to them. Transsexuality is inborn with symptoms being manifested by the age of 4 or 5 years of age while autogynephillia does not and those who identify with it report it ocurred in their teen years and beyond. Sexual orientation has nothing at all to do with transsexuality., a
Ba: breast augmentation., e
Bdsm: bondage, domination, sado-masochism, a consensual exchange of power, usually with erotic overtones. Some bdsm activity may also involve gender roleplaying., e
Benjamin, harry: a pioneer in the medical treatment of transsexuals and author of the transsexual phenomenon and the original standards of care. The hbigda is named in honor of him., e
Bi: bisexual, e
Bi-gendered : person who can shift between masculine and feminine gender behaviour. This differes from the androgyne in that an androgyne keeps their gender role at all times whereas bi-gendered shift or change their role to suit the situation at that moment., a
Binary gender system : culturally defined code of acceptable behaviors, teaching that there can only be male or female roles. Where it comes to transgendered individuals this system becomes flawed, as transgendred individuals fall under a multi-gendered system, beyond the binary gender system., a
Bind : (binding) to wrap or tape the female breast tissue to make it appear to be flat like a male chest area. Action is performed by female-to-male transsexuals. This is also performed by use of a binder, which is a rigid corset like item designed to flatten the female breast tissue so as to make it seem like a male chest area., a
Biogirl also bio-girl, a non-trans woman. Some do not consider this a preferred term (see gg), because it implies a trans person has no biological basis for identifying as female., e
Bioguy also bio-guy, a non-trans man. Some do not consider this a preferred term, because it implies a trans person has no biological basis for identifying as male., e
Biphilic (also bi-philic): see bisexual., b
Biphobia : (also homophobia) the irrational fear of love, affection, and erotic behavior between people of the same gender. Expressed as negative feelings, attitudes, actions or behaviors against those perceived as non-heterosexuals. Often directed at those perceived as expressing or presenting culturally stereotypically non-heterosexual characteristics and or blurred gender roles. Biphobia also includes refuting the existance of bisexuality by believing every individual is either homosexual or heterosexual., a
Birdsnest - term given to a wig badly-worn by a transvestite. Often, an aspiring transvestite believes all he has to do to look like a woman is plant a cheap wig on his - often balding - head. The result is a "birdsnest" where the wig is perched on the top of the head, invariably with a parting, leaving the face below looking like an inverted egg. Definately a practice to be avoided!, g
Bisexual : (bi) a person who is emotionally, sexually, spiritually, or physically attracted to persons from both the male and female genders., a
Blanchard, ray: the researcher that coined the term autogynephilia. See these posts for more information., b
Body dysphoria: see gender dysphoria., b
Bottom surgery : term used for genital surgery performed below the waist. Term is most often used by female-to-male persons and referring to creation of a penis and simulated testicals in their case. Term is also used by some male-to-female persons for the surgery to create a neo vagina. Not all transsexual persons from either case opt for this surgery. For some due to cost, some due to health, some simply due to personal choice., a
Boy mode: living as male: "i worked in boy mode while i finished my electrolysis.", e
Boydyke : a "female bodied" person who intentionally or non-intentionally presents or expresses what is culturally sterotypical male or masculine, boyish characteristic. Some wish to pass as a male while remaining female., a
Boy's love (also bl or yaoi, terms taken from japanese culture): female-oriented fictional media, especially japanese style manga comics,  that focus on homoerotic or homoromanticmale sexual relationships, usually created by female authors. Given that both female writers and readers identify with the male characters it is fair to say that much of this material can be considered crossdreamer fiction. The term "yaoi" (short for "yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi", meaning "no climax, no fall , no meaning". Is sometimes understood as synonymous with boy's love, sometimes as a more sexually explicit sub-category of bl. Boydyke: a biological female who intentionally or non-intentionally expresses and/or presents culturally/stereotypically masculine, particularly boyish, characteristics. Also, one who enjoys being perceived as a young male (passing)., b
Brain sex: the concept that male and female brains have distinct characteristics that lead to differences in thoughts and behavior., e
Breast augmentation surgery : (ba) this surgery technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. The male-to-female individual may seek breast augmentation if they desire a larger bust size than is achieved through hormone therapy. Standard augmentation involves one or the other of two types of implants, either saline or silicone., a
Breast forms/breast enhancers : often an individual who is a cross dresser or a male-to-female transsexual will use a breast form such as those made for and most often used by ladies who have had mastectomies performed due to cancer. Most of these consist of silicone shaped to look like a female breast and to have weight like a genuine natal breast would have. Also, there are some forms made out of foam rubber, which while giving a general appearance of a breast do not have the weighted bounce effect of a silicone breast form. Some mtf whom have achieved some breast growth via hormones but are not satisfied with size of their breasts, opt for a breast enhancer such as the style that go in the bra below the breasts to sort of push up the breasts and make them appear larger than they in reality are., a
Brick: a derogatory term for someone who isn't accepted as female., e
Brickhouse [noun]: a derogatory term used to describe gender conventions by people who probably would never consider attending one of them., e
Bricklayer-in-a-dress is a term used to describe a man who thinks he is a transvestite solely by virtue of his putting-on one of his wife's dresses - or worse, one of her nighties. He then takes a photo of himself in what he considers to be an alluring pose and facial expression invariably composed of pursed lips, from which anyone viewing the photo wisely averts their gaze, preferring rather to conjure-up images of the rain-forest as suggested by the aspiring transvestite's copious growth of chest-hair., g
Bum-pads - these are hilarious, but are surprisingly bought by quite a few transvestites. They are marketed by the specialist transvestite-supply companies as a means of acquiring a female rounded-buttock look. In actuality. They make the transvestite look like a grotesque pantomime dame. Transvestites would do well to remember that the women they seek to emulate in appearance come in all shapes and sizes, as do their bottoms. In over 40 years as a transvestite i have never worn bum-pads and never will. Their sole use is to turn one upside down and sit on it when you have piles., g
Butch : term used to describe or identify a person who often self identifies or presents and expresses what is culturally sterotypical male or masculine, boyish characteristics. Term can be used in both positive and negative ways., a
Castration: removal of the testicles. The medical term is orchiectomy., e
Cd : (cross dresser) : person who wears clothing and items normally worn by the opposite gender from their own biological gender. An outdated older term for a cd is the term transvestite. The majority of persons who cd are of heterosexual orientation, many even being happily married. However, there are also many whom are of a gay orientation. While for some this is a way of simply experiencing a temporary role as the opposite gender in which they feel free from the rigours of their day to day life in their assigned gender, for others this also presents a sense of auto arousal by the wearing or the clothing of the oposite gender., a
Chicks with dicks: another term from pornography used to describe transwomen. Considered highly offensive., e
Chondrolaryngoplasty : surgery involving adam's apple reduction or trachea shave. The surgeon reduces the cartilage in the throat to make the shape more feminine., a
Cis-sexual : person who is not transgendered and has one of the two binary genders as simply either male or female., a
Clock (verb): to be recognized as transgender., e
Clocked : (getting read) being detected as a person who is cross-dressed., a
Clone: [noun]: a transsexual woman or man who attempts to fit into the mold of the "classic transsexual" scenario, i.e. Uses pre-scripted cliches like "woman trapped in man's body," "known from my first memory," etc... Can be used to objective describe someone, or it can be used derogatorily., e
Closet where transgendered people hide before coming out. This is also the place where we hang our favorite clothes., f
Closeted (or in the closet): not disclosing (coming out) or being secretive about an individual's own sexual orientation and/or gender identity., b
Cogiati: an unscientific online test for determining your gender. I don't recommend this or other gender tests., e
Colovaginoplasty : this method of creating a vagina for the male-to-female individual, involves cutting away a section of the sigmoid colon and using it to form a vaginal lining. This surgery is also sometimes performed on females with androgen insensitivity syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or vaginal agenesis, mayer-rokitansky syndrome, and other intersexed conditions, where non-invasive forms of lengthening the vagina cannot be done and, mostly, it is used on male-to-female transsexuals as an alternative to penile inversion with or without an accompanying skin graft taken usually from either the thigh or abdomen. Due to numerous potential complications most surgeons will use or recommend a colovaginoplasty method only when there is no other alternative. The use of this on male-to-female patients is generally reserved for those whom have attempted removal of their male genitals and have made the general standard recognizable reassignment surgery methods unusable.., a
Coming out : the process of becoming aware of, understanding and accepting one's own sexual orientation or gender identity. This also consists of the decision making process of identifying oneself openly in disclosure of this to another., a
Conversion therapy : dangerous attempt to "cure" homosexuals or transsexuals by homophobic religious groups. Loosly based on reparative therapy declared outmoded by the american psychiatric association. Practice usually done by unlicensed church "counselors". Methods used include extreme guilt, hellfire, bible text, non-acceptance and damnation. Electrodes often placed on genitals to measure reactions. Church members are more interested in their own homophobic fears than the welfare of their patients. As one exodus "counselor" told a gay man "you would be better off to commit suicide than go back to the homosexual lifestyle". What therapy encourages death as an alternative? Upon completion members must sign a statement they have been "cured". There are few long term followups and members questioned later often admit lying to their questioners. "cures" are almost always short term and for transgender people amount to nothing more than temporary purging. The danger afterwards is increased suicide attempts as evidenced by users in our crisis rooms here. This therapy is not recommended as it is dangerous and deadly., a
Corset : a corset is a very constrictive ladies undergarment worn by some cross dressers and male-to-female transsexuals in an atempt to mold and shape their torso into a desired female shape for the aesthetic purposes of more readily appearing curvy and female, by reducing the waist, and thereby lifting the bust if any and more readily showing the hips. There are some corset tops which are designed with a mini corset as an outer part of the garment. Often these are designed to cater to goth cultural fashions. Historically a corset has lacing to hold it together at the back. Sometimes it is at the front instead. Tightening or loosening the lacing produces changes in how firm or rigid the corset will be. Most full size corsets with back lacing are almost impossible to be properly laced by the wearer alone, thus normally requiring a second person to tighten the lacing and tie it off. Button or hook front busks on some corsets allow a wearer to remove them without untieing them and re-place them on their body at a later date all by themself. It should be noted however, that this process can seriously damage the busk of the corset. This is because it is under extreme pressure in most cases. Corsets are most often comprised of flexible materials such as coutil cloth, or leather and stiffened with boning also referred to as ribs or stays, inserted into channels in the cloth or leather. Plastic is now the most commonly used material in lightweight corsets, whereas spring or spiral steel is preferred for stronger corsets. Corsets preferably should be fitted to the individual wearer., a
Cosmetic surgery any other surgery needed to enhance appearance in the new gender role. Frequent m2f choices include liposuction, rhinoplasty, trachea shave, and breast implants., f
Crossdreaming (or cross-dreaming, also xd, covers some of the same phenomena as autogynephilia/autoandrophilia): term made by me to describe the act of dreaming about having the body of the opposite sex. These feminization fantasies (in case of biological men) and masculinization fantasies (in the case of biological women) are often found sexually arousing. Male to female crossdreamers, for instance, often imagine themselves having breasts and female genitalia. Often, but not always, crossdreamers will play the culturally defined role of the opposite sex in these fantasies. Female to male crossdreamers will for instance fantasize about taking the proactive, dominant, thrusting, role when having intercourse. Crossdreaming is often, but not always, expressed through crossdressing, role playing and/or transgender erotica. It seems that most crossdreamers are attracted to persons of the same sex as the target sex of their fantasies. M2f crossdreamers are attracted to women. F2m crossdreamers are attracted to men. Research indicates, however, that there are also androphilic (man loving) m2f crossdreamers and gynephilic f2m crossdreamers. Most crossdreamers identify with their biological sex, at least partly and in public. Studies of m2f crossdressers indicate that close to 20 percent of them may consider sex reassignment surgery, however, and some of them do transition. The term crossdreaming is based on the concept of autogynephilia (see autogyenphilia) which was developed by ray blanchard. However, the term autogynephilia (or autoandrophilia for f2m crossdreamers) indicates that the conditions is caused by autoerotisism (autoin the meaning of "self") whereby the person has internalized the external love object, becoming sexually attracted to the idea of him or herself having the body of the opposite sex. The term crossdreaming does not entail such an explanation. Personally i think crossdreaming is at least partly caused by a biologically based gender dysphoria. The term crossdreaming can also be considered a parallel to harry benjamin's types 1, 2, 3 and 4. They may develop into type 5 and 6., b
Cross-dresser (cd) this is a person who enjoys dressing in clothes appropriate to the "opposite" gender. This is different from a transsexual who has not completed transition to the point of being full-time. Cross-dressers have little or no interest in changing gender. Most people who self-identify as cross-dressers are comfortable with this part-time status; however, many transsexuals go through a stage of being "only" a cross-dresser until they are ready to accept all the implications of being a transsexual. As with transsexuals, estimates about the number of cross-dressers vary wildly. One percent of the population is probably a good midpoint, but i have seen estimates as high as five percent. Many more people have experimented with cross-dressing, but that is not the same as being a cross-dresser. The keys are repetition and incorporating cross-dressing into one's lifestyle, publicly or privately., f
Cross-dressing is a term mostly used by north americans to describe what the rest of the world calls transvestism. The normal use of the word "transvestite" relates to a person who dresses fully as a woman, and "cross-dresser" to a fetishistic person who wears articles of women's clothing such as underwear. In the u.s. the meaning of the terms are reversed, which makes it easy to see how confusion can arise. Having said that, many american terms and expressions have meanings opposite to the english ones, and so this particular linguistic anomaly is not that unusual., g
Crossenacting: arousal to the act or fantasy of doing something regarded as feminine (in the case of men) and masculine (in the case of women). Blanchard calls this behavioral autogynephilia in the case of men (see autogynephilia)., b
Crossexuality: term coined by me to describe a hypothetical condition that can lead to crossdressing and crossdreaming (see autogynephilia). Crossexuality is the cause, crossdreaming and crossdressing are the effects., b
Cross-living : act of cross dressing full time 24/7 living in the role of the opposite gender full time, perceiving oneself as the opposite gender but not transsexual as the person does not wish to physically change gender., a
Ct: see classic transsexual., b
Cut: [verb] to have genital surgery performed upon an individual (as in, 'yeah, she said she was cut in 1999.'), e
Deep stealth: someone whose trans status is not known by anyone they interact with on a daily basis, esp. A sex partner., e
De-transition : to return to living as a member of one's biological sex after extended full time living as one's target sex., a
Detransition: halting or reversing a decision to change sex., e
Dg: see drag queen., b
Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders: the guideline that the american psychiatric associationpublishes which details what is and is not a psychiatric illness. "gender identity disorder" is currently listed., e
Dilate: to use a dilator., e
Dilator: a device used after vaginoplasty to maintain depth and width of the vagina., e
Dl: driver's license. One of the documents people often get switched immediately after transition., e
Dq: dairy queen, i.e. A drag queen who's had breast implants., e
Drag : (f : drag king, m : drag queen, female or male impersonator) individuals who exaggerate cross dressed gender roles often for purposes of performances at gatherings or on stage. Some drag queens even get breast implants to help with their performance role. Some live the role full time., a
Drag is a name for clothing of the opposite sex, as worn by a transgendered person. For male to female person, it usually involves dresses, skirts, tops, stockings and underwear. Unfortunately, many aspiring transvestites forget that dressing in drag does not in itself make them a transvestite: they have to do whatever they can to actually make themselves at least look female - if not feminine - by the selection of a suitable wig and by acquiring basic make-up skills., g
Drag queen: a person, usually a man, who dresses, and usually acts, like a woman often for the purpose of entertaining or performing. Drag queens often identify as homosexual (androphilic) males, as opposed to crossdressers, who are most likely gynephilic males (see crossdresser, androphilic and gynephilic)., b
Drag queens are usually not transvestites, but homosexuals who dress as women for a living. Rather than emulate women, they take pains to parody them. Ironically, many women find drag-queens very entertaining, not realising that they as women are being viciously parodied by these drag queens who by virtue of their homosexuality feel nothing but contempt and distaste for women. As may be seen: an entirely opposite approach to women than that of genuine transvestites., g
Drag: a type of expression that typically involves exaggerated performance of gendered characteristics. A performer is called a drag queen if they perform as a woman or a drag king if they perform as a man., e
Dragzilla: a derogatory term for someone who isn't accepted as female., e
Dressing the act of wearing the clothes, makeup, accessories, etc., of one's gender of choice--in short, being cross-dressed. M2f transgendered people also refer to this as being en femme., f
Dsm: diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, the guideline that the american psychiatric association publishes which details what is and is not a psychiatric illness. "gender identity disorder" is currently listed., e
Dude out (verb): to be read: "i got duded out on the street by some kids.", e
Dyke : (femme dyke, bi dyke, butch dyke) terms used from both negative view and positive view. A "female-body" person or woman identifying with other women as their interest. Historically the terminology was used in the negative to identify lesbians expressing male culturally stereotypically masculine characteristics, but has been used in the positive view of self identification by many modern lesbians. (femme) more feminine version. (bi) may show some interest in men but is primarily interested in women. (butch) acts more male like and is normally only interested in women., a
Effeminate : term used often in negative context, to identify a person usually of male origin who expresses or presents what are stereotypically culturally feminine characteristics., a
Electro: electrolysis, e
En drab: dressed as a male., e
En femme: dressed as a female., e
Endo(crinologist) : a doctor who deals with the endocrine glands and their hormones. This doctor is the one who prescribes estrogen and progesterone in one form or another for the male-to-female individual, and prescribes testosterone for the female-to-male individual. This is also the doctor who monitors the persons endocrinological functions on hormones via bloodwork., a
Endo: short for endocrinologist, e
Endocrinologist: a doctor who specializes in the endocrine system, which produces and regulates hormones., e
Erections - definately something that most transvestites want to hide when they're in drag. Some use tape to secure their genitals between their legs, but a far better way is to wear tight panties and foundation garments. This will usually prevent the transvestite resembling a woman with a tent-pole., g
F2m / ftm : (female-to-male) term used to identify a person of female biological birth whom identifies as male. Lives in the male role and identifies as masculine. Most will try for testosterone to take on male secondary sexual characteristics. Most opt for top surgery to reduce the female breasts to male size. Some opt for the hysterectomy and bottom surgery involving creation of a penis from the clitoris and creation of a scrotum with testicular shaped implants. Some do not go for bottom surgery for reasons ranging from cost, health, or personal choice. Many prefer the newer term transman., a
Fag : derogatory term that historically has been used in the negative by society, but is also positively used as a self identifier by some persons. A male bodied person or man who identifies with other men as their attraction. Historically used in negative context of labeling gay males who express or present a cutural stereotipically feminine set of characteristics., a
Fantasy - for many, transvestism is a fantasy - a fantasy of feminity. For these people, it will always remain as a sexual quirk. Transvestism is actually a reality - a very strong reality. Those who only feel the need to dress as a woman periodically, in order to obtain sexual satisfaction, are not real transvestites. Okay - no harm done - good luck to them. But to be a real transvestite, one has to look and feel the part in everyday life. One has to adopt the persona, or alternatively, be adopted by it., g
Female bodied : (fembody) a person who was assigned to female gender at birth, or whom has had their genitals surgically altered to be a woman or girl, either by personal choice or often by parental choice in many cases of an intersexxed child., a
Female: in biology, the sex of an organism that produces ova, or the larger gamete., e
Female-to-male (ftm): describes the trajectory of a person who is changing or has changed their body and lived gender role from a birth-assigned female to an affirmed male. Also, trans male, trans man, or transman., d
Feminine: characteristics of behaviors associated with females in a culture., e
Femininity - is a concept largely unknown to many transvestites. It is a common misconception that all one has to do to emulate a woman is to dress as one. The result is a bizarre amalgam of quasi-female appearance and male facial expressions and body posture. No-one seems to tell transvestites that they not only have to look female, they also have to act in a feminine way., g
Feminization: adapting mannerisms or a phenotype deemed feminine in a culture., e
Femme : term used for a person whom identifies with being a woman, who understands the power and seduction of the feminine spirit, and or one whom is powerful as a woman. Can be used to identify a person whom expresses and or presents culturally stereotypically feminine characteristics. Dependant on context, it may be used as a positive or a negative term., a
Femme: (may be understood as derogatory) used to identify a lesbian (biologcial female) who expresses and/or presents culturally/stereotypically feminine characteristics., b
Fephe: also fifi. [rare] female phenotype. A non-transsexual woman, the emphasis is on the typical female body morph rather than the chromosomes (see also gg)., e
Fetish: (on this blog used for sexual fetish) the sexual arousal brought on by any object, situation or body part not conventionally viewed as being sexual in nature. If you follow the official definitions of fetish, as found in the psychiatric manuals, crossdreaming cannot be understood as a fetish. Some crossdreamers seem to think that the term has a wider meaning, including any sexual desire that can -- presumably -- be explained as the end result of a personal psychological development (as opposed to being caused by an inborn, biological, factor). In my opinion this use of the word can only cause unnecessary confusion an further stigmatization of crossdreamers., b
Ffs: facial feminization surgery., e
Fi: female illusionist (or not as preferred, female impersonator), e
Fish: 1. A very derogatory term used by some to refer to non-trans women. Often considered highly offensive. 2. A compliment among some, too: "you look so fish.", e
Fistula: a rare but very serious complication of vaginoplasty, where a hole develops between the colon and the vagina., e
For some cross dressing can be part of a complex about their sexual orientation - some people cannot accept themselves to be bisexual or gay and so cross dress because the thin veil of the woman's role allows them to act out fantasies that their own mental conditioning is at odds with. It's basically like saying to yourself it's ok for me to be having sex with a man because at the moment i'm a woman., c2
Ft: full-time, living full time in one's chosen gender., e
Ftm: female-to-male., e
Full-time this describes a person who is cross-living "full-time" in an adopted gender role, professionally, socially, and privately. These usually do not change all at once; typically, private and social living in the new role provides a practice period for the more critical--and risky--change in professional role. If this is done to satisfy a pre-requisite for surgery, it may also be called the real-life test (rlt)., f
Gaff : a type of panty designed to hide the male bulge by tucking it away in a pocket or pouch within it so as to hold the penis between the legs giving the appearance that there is no penis at all. This item is often worn by individuals who cross dress, or by pre-op male-to-female transsexuals., a

Gender binary (controversial term): classification of sex and gender into two distinct forms of masculine and feminine. At the moment i tend to believe that some cisgendered and transsexual people more or less follow the dichotomy of the gender binary, while others don't., b
Gender community : (transgender community) a loose association of individuals and organizations who transgress gender norms in a variety of ways. Celebrating a recently born self awareness, this community is growing fast across all lines. The central ethic of this community is unconditional acceptance of individual exercise of freedoms including gender and sexual identity and orientation., a
Gender disphoria - is a much-abused term. It relates to people who feel that they are born in the wrong body. Although there are females who feel this, more often than not it is felt by males. It is true that there are a small number of people to whom this may apply, and gender-reassignment surgery is appropriate. Unfortunately however, a great number of men who put on one of their wife's dresses and buy a cheap wig, convince themselves that they "were born in the wrong body." wrong! They are just fetishists who use the concept of gender disphoria in order to justify aberrant behaviour., g
Gender dysphoria : term used to describe the intense continuous discomfort resulting from an individuals belief in the inappropriateness of their assigned gender at birth and resulting gender role expectations. A clinical psychological diagnosis, which is offensive to many in the transgender community, but is required to receive hormone replacement therapy and or sexual reassignment surgery. (srs, grs)., a
Gender dysphoria: a condition where a person feels that he or she is trapped within a body of the wrong sex. Dysphoria is defined as an unpleasant or uncomfortable mood, such as sadness (depressed mood), anxiety, irritability, or restlessness. See also gender identity disorder. Recently i have started using the terms "sex dysphoria" or "body dysphoria"  instead, as this suffering is primarily about the body, and not about cultural gender roles., b
Gender expression: the physical manifestation of one's gender identity, usually expressed through clothing, mannerisms, and chosen names (see gender identity)gender identity or core gender identity (controversial terms): the gender a person self-identifies as (see gender 1)., b
Gender identity : an inner sense that one is or belongs to a particular sex., a
Gender identity disorder (controversial term): formal diagnosis used by psychologists and physicians to describe persons who experience significant gender dysphoria (discontent with the biological sex they were born with). Some argue that there is no disorder, as they understand gender as a social construct. I am pretty certain that there is a biological basis for classic transsexuals (see classic transsexual women). Given that their gender identity is different from their biological sex, that would meant that the word disorder is appropriate. I also believe crossdreaming has a biological basis, but this has in no way been proven (see crossexuality) . I have recently started using the term "sex identity" instead of "gender identity", as this -- in the case of gender dysphoric transgender -- is more about alienation from the sex of one's birth body than from cultural gender roles., b
Gender identity: the sense of one's self as male or female., d
Gender nazi [rare]: (1) a derogatory term assigned by gender-different people to gender caregivers (e.g., "gatekeepers") who insist that their patients jump through a series of soc hoops to affirm their existence as gender-different people. (2) a derogatory term applied by some gender-different people to other gender-different people who adamantly follow the socword-for-word, argue vehemently on its behalf and pedestal gatekeepers as modern-day saviors., e

Expressed as negative feelings, attitudes, actions or behaviors against those perceived as breaking and or blurring cultural stereotypical gender roles., a
Gender presentation: the expression of gender. People may present or express gender in a variety of ways that may or may not correspond with their gender identity. If a person says they are transgender, the gender they are expressing through their dress, hairstyle, mannerisms, or other behaviors may or may not correspond to the gender an observer might perceive through their presentation. Most people who are not transgender dress and comport themselves in ways that reinforce their gender identity. Transgender people usually do the same, but often they are unable to do so without social and/or medical support, so the first time (or first several times) they are encountered, particularly if they are pre-transition, they may be presenting their gender as they believe they are expected by others to present, rather than as they would feel most comfortable, or as they would if they felt they were free or otherwise able to express their gender identity., d
Gender queer : term which is used by some individuals whom may or may not fit on the spectrum of trans, or be labeled as trans, but whom identify their gender and sexual orientation to be outside the assumed norm., a
Gender reassignment surgery - is the technical name for having a sex-change. There are only two valid reasons for having this medical proceedure. One is that the person genuinely feels that they were born in the wrong body. The other is that they want to be a woman so much, usually for passive sexual purposes, that it presents as an option. For either of these, the results can be very rewarding. The downside is that the side-effects of the hormones needed to partly facilitate a sex-change have the unwelcome result of shortening the life span. Therefore many questions need to be asked by the prospective changer, so that a fully-informed decision can be reached., g
Gender reassignment surgery : (grs, sex reassignment surgery-srs) : permanent surgical refashioning of genetalia to resemble the genetalia of the desired gender. Sought to attain congruence between one's body and one's gender identity., a

Gender therapist : licensed therapist who follows the hbigda (wpath) transgender standards of care. Encourages legal prescription hormone use prescribed usually by an endocrinoligist with a letter recommendation by the therapist. Obtaining horomones illegally without medical testing can and has led to death most notably from "thrombobis" or dangerous blood clots. The therapist provides guidance during rle and provides recommendation letter for grs. Many object to hbigda as "gatekeeping" however it is the safest alternative now available. Others argue that transsexuality is not a mental illness as outlined in dsm iv and that it is a medical condition. Perhaps this will change in dsm v due out in 2011., a
Gender (controversial term): (1) in social studies: the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. (2) in biology: the state of being male or female. The biology of gender is a scientific analysis of the physical basis for behavioural differences between males and females. In this blog i will use the term in both ways, trying to remember to tell you which is which., b
Genderfuck: someone who appears visibly gender variant. A form of gender identity or gender expression, using parody and exaggeration to call attention to its transgression of gender roles, seeking to expose them as artificial, often by manipulating one's appearance to create gender dissonance or ambiguity in stark opposition of the gender binary. Used for crossdressing with contempt for any concern about passing; e.g., a male wearing a skirt, but with a beard and unshaved legs. As i have noted elsewhere: while there is clearly many facets of the gender roles that are culturally determined, i strongly believe there is a biological core to gender identity., e
Genderpac: a national advocacy group fighting gender stereotypes., e
Genderqueer [adjective]: any individual that doesn't -- or won't -- adhere to the expectation of the only two gender presentations that which our culture allows, as based upon one's ministerial and external 'birth sex'. (as in, "when patrick was a kid, he didn't realize the extent of how genderqueer he was, despite his inherent tomboyishness on the playground."), e

Genetic male (gm) a non-transgendered male., f
Genetic sex : term used to refer to chromosomal makeup of a individual. Often used to refer to assigned gender at birth., a
Getting read : (clocked) being detected as a person who is cross-dressed., a
Getting read being detected as a person who is cross-dressed. Occasionally, this is called getting clocked no transgendered person likes to get read, but the reality is that passing requires extensive practice, and sometimes training, hormone therapy, electrolysis, and cosmetic surgery. Much of this practice must be done in public, where the transgendered person will get read when he or she makes mistakes. A person who is prepared to accept this fact will be much more comfortable in public. One transsexual i know simply starts out from her home with the assumption that everyone will read her, and that that's ok. Even for her, though, this attitude is easier said than felt. Getting read can be the occasion for abuse. It happened to me several months ago at a mall in greensboro. I was in a store looking at earrings, when i heard a voice shouting from the front of the store, "that's a dude, man; that's a dude!" i imagined a group of teenagers crowding the small store entrance, none of them holding any goodwill toward me. I did not look at them, but i did glance at the shop clerk, who was looking at me. I waited until a couple of minutes until after the commotion died down, looking at jewelry in which i had absolutely no interest, then left the store., f
Gg: genetic girl, sometimes used as a term to describe non-trans women (as opposed to tg). Sometimes considered derogatory by women who were raised as girls from birth onwards and by some transwomen who feel that chromosomes are not the defining characteristic for womanhood., e
Gid : (gender identity disorder) according to the dsm .. A mental illness where one believes they have a gender identity that is incongruant to their biological gender. (see gender dysphoria above.)., a

Glbt: gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender. An overarching term for anyone outside gender norms., e
Groin job [rare]: a de-medicalized, casual way of describing genital surgery, without inferring that it reassigns sex. "groin job" is not popular by people who subscribe to the philosophy that being gender-different is an illness or a disorder., e
Grs: gender reassignment surgery. Another term for vaginoplasty., e
Gw: genetic woman, sometimes used as a term to describe non-transsexual women., e
Gynephilic: attracted to women, the opposite of androphilic, e
Harry benjamin syndrome (also hbs, controversial): also known as hbs this is purported to be an intersex condition that is said to occur in the womb in the first twelve weeks after conception. It is based on the brain sex theory by harry benjamin for transsexuals. Other studies done though do not agree. The creator's of hbs are not medical professionals and it is not accepted by the american medical association. While the theory is an excellent thesis it is not accepted as fact in the medical community. These unqualified lay-people have written their own unauthorized standards of care which are not medically valid or accepted. The only accepted transgender standards of care are hbigda (wpath) which is signed by medical professionals. The hbs soc has no medical signatures on it., a
Hbigda: harry benjamin international gender dysphoria association, an professional organization involved in gender variance. In 2006, they implemented a name change to wpath (world professional association for transgender health)., e

Heterosexism : the institutionalized assumption that everyone is heterosexual and that heterosexualism is inherently superior to and preferable to homosexuality or bisexuality., a
Heterosexual : an individual who is emotionally, spiritually, physically, and or sexually attracted to those of the opposite gender., a
Heterosexuality or homosexuality - often it is asked whether transvestites are heterosexual or homosexual. Transvestites and transvestite groups spring into defensive mode, and declare that - although they like dressing as women - they are really heterosexual, without a homosexual thought in their heads. Total rubbish! If one dresses as a woman, then it follows that the normal, albeit restrained, agressiveness needed to acquire and maintain an erection when making love to a woman, is absent. The two feelings - that of passive femininity and that of masculinity - cannot exist side-by-side. It follows therefore, that transvestites are not heterosexual; they are homosexual, or at the very least - bisexual., g
Hir : a gender term used by some in place of him or her, a new pronoun for those folks who stand outside the binary gender system that we have in society., a
Hold-ups - are hold-up stockings. These are much better than tights, and less trouble than suspenders and stockings. They give the right look, and also leave the transvestite ready for sex when needed, without having to pull off tights., g
Homophobia : (also biphobia) the irrational fear of love, affection, and erotic behavior between people of the same gender. Expressed as negative feelings, attitudes, actions or behaviors against those perceived as non-heterosexuals. Often directed at those perceived as expressing or presenting culturally stereotypically non-heterosexual characteristics and or blurred gender roles. Biphobia also includes refuting the existance of bisexuality by believing every individual is either homosexual or heterosexual., a
Homosexual : romantic or sexual attraction or behavior among members of the same sex. On this blog an m2f transsexual woman is homosexual if she is attracted to women, an f2m transsexual man is homosexual if he is attracted to men. To avoid confusion i use the word androphilic (attracted to men) and gynephilic (attracted to women) instead. Blanchard uses the term homosexual transsexual (hsts) to describe m2f transsexuals that are attracted to men. I find that very confusing., b
Hormone replacement therapy : (hrt, hormonal sex reassignment). Administration of hormones to affect the development of secondary sex characteristics of the opposite assigned gender. This process that is lifelong, of using hormones to change the internal body chemistry. For male to female estrogens are used, and for female to male androgens are used (testosterone). Hormone use without medical supervision is strongly discouraged as it has resulted in thousands of transgender deaths. Herbal concotions taken in large doses not approved by the fda have also resulted in deaths and disabilty as well as having poor results. Don't be fooled by herbal companies marketing to transgenders for profit with exaggerated claims. Save your money for prescription hormones., a
Hormones estrogen and progesterone (female sex hormones) for the m2f transsexual, and testosterone (male sex hormone) for the f2m transsexual. This is a major topic on its own, but as a quick reference, there are a few points to mention. First, these are powerful drugs, and should only be used with medical supervision. This supervision is available for transsexuals who work within the framework of the standards of care. Major effects of hormones (breasts for m2f; lower voice, and facial and body hair for f2m) are not reversible. Significant side effects of long-term usage include sterility, and impotence for genetic males. Hormone therapy is necessary for transition, but starting hormones is a decision that must not be made lightly., f
Hrc: human rights campaign, an activist organization for gay and lesbian advocacy. Their early lack of trans inclusion has softened in recent years, most notably in their inclusion of transpeople in the employment non-discrimination act (enda)., e
Hrt: hormone replacement therapy, e
Hsts (controversial term used by ray blanchard): homosexual transsexual male. The real meaning of this term is androphilic m2f transexual woman (see homosexuality). Blanchard does not use this term for gynephilic f2m transmen., b
Humour - it is absolutely essential for a transvestite to have a sense of humour, and above all to have the ability to laugh at herself. It will help her keep her feet on the ground, and to retain a sense of reality which will enable her to make informed decisions about her activities when dressed as a woman. Many occasions will occur when the make-up turns-out wrong, and the end result is more like coco the clown rather than a woman. It is at times like these that a transvestite must be able to laugh at herself., g

Internalized homophobia/transphobia : the belief that same-gender sexual orientation and or gender identity is inferior to heterosexual orientation and or masculine or feminine gender identity. The internalization of negative messages, feelings about oneself and one's group, and beliefs about how people like you should be treated, which often leads to self-hate and difficulty with self-acceptance. Also irrational fear of breaking cultural or stereotypical gender roles., a
International classification of diseases (icd): an international version of the dsm, with close parallels. Often used by insurance companies., e
Intersex(xed) : an individual born with full or partial genetalia of both genders, or with underdeveloped genitalia. Some are born with internal organs of a female with no external signs of female but with male external genitalia. Surgery is common in infancy, when a singular gender is assigned. Many who are assigned such without self choice develop a sense or feeling of a loss of (an) essential part(s) of themself. Often the person so assigned to one sex by surgery in infancy wishes to be the gender opposite the one chosen for them., a
Intersexuality: in humans refers to intermediate or atypical combinations of physical features that usually distinguish male from female. This is usually understood to be congenital, involving chromosomal, morphologic, genital and/or gonadal anomalies, such as diversion from typical xx-female or xy-male presentations, e.g., sex reversal (xy-female, xx-male), genital ambiguity, sex developmental differences. An intersexed individual may have biological characteristics of both the male and female sexes. If transexuality and crossdreaming/autogynephilia have biological (brain) foundations it could be argued that these conditions also are intersexual. In this blog, however, i will not use the term in that way, in order to avoid unnecessary confusion., b
Is: intersexed, e
Jobs for transvestites who insist on wearing drag to work, are few and far between. Many employers are tolerant of the peccadilos of their staff, but the distracting element of a fork-lift driver in drag is not condusive to peaceful staff relations., g

Lesbigatr: lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender. An overarching term for anyone outside gender norms, e
Letters: two letters from qualified therapists for getting vaginoplasty., e
Lhr: laser hair removal, e
Lighting - is a crucial aspect of transvestism. Few of us - no matter how good we are at it - are literally in our best light in daylight. Perhaps for that reason we could consider ourselves creatures of the night. The general rule i have found is that the dimmer the light, the more realistic - or, more correctly, the less unrealistic - we are. Indeed, lighting, or lack of it, is a transvestite's best friend., g
Lipo: liposuction, e
M2f, mtf, male-to-female : term used to identify a person who was male gendered at birth but whom identifies as female, lives as a woman, or identifies as feminine. Some prefer the term transwoman., a

Makes this a close to useless term in my book., b

Name change: legal documents documenting a court-ordered name change., e
Natal woman: a term used by some to exclude transsexuals from the definition of femininity. See also woman-born woman, e
Neoclitoris : the created clitoris for a male-to-female transsexual individual during sex reassignment surgery. There are two ways to create a neoclitoris for the transsexual woman. The most common method is to remove the head or glans of the penis, and use some of that tissue to function in the position of a natal female's clitoris. Some transsexual women have the entire penis head used as their clitoris. This partly depends on the doctor performing the surgery. Some have spongiform from their urethra's used to function as the neoclitoris. Most transsexual women's bodies readily accept the relocation of glans penile tissue in the area of a biological woman's clitoris., a
New woman a post-op m2f transsexual, legally certified to be a woman. After surgery, the doctor gives the new woman legal papers which can be used to change gender on documents such as birth certificates and drivers licenses. A post-op f2m transsexual, of course, is anew man., f

Or in some cases it is for medical reasons that one is forced to remain non-op. Also there are some for whom monitary reasons prevent the surgery thus making them remain in a non-op mode either temporarily or for extended periods of time and in many cases for life., a
Non-op (non-operative): someone who lives as female but does not plan to have vaginoplasty., e

Also it is recommended that the mtf post op visit an gynecologist at least once yearly to be sure that she is healthy. While the mtf on has no cervix or uterus it is always possible to get cancer of the vagina. This type of doctor can make sure that the mtf postop individual is checked foer this in the yearly checkup., a
Olive oil - is a must for transvestites who are desirious of changing their voice to more closely resemble a female one. Women's voices are softer, with fewer harsh resonances than men. Swallowing a tablespoon of olive oil just prior to talking, has the effect of diminishing the harsher resonances and also making the voice much smoother. Try it out - it may taste horrible, but it does work. If the taste is too harsh, add a squirt of lemon juice., g
Omnisexual : a term used along with pansexual. (see pansexual below.)., a
Oral sex - is something that transvestites - like men or women - do, or don't do. The reason it deserves a mention is that a few fundamental issues need to be addressed before doing it for the first time. Firstly, the risk of infection has to be born in mind, although strictly speaking there is far less risk with oral sex than with penetrative sex. If you're worried, there are a range of flavoured condoms on the market. My personal favourite is banana, although strawberry is a close second. Avoid lime - it always makes me gag. Secondly, whatever you do - don't bite. Imagine what it feels like if some idiot bites you down there. Ouch! So if you bite someone, you can't be surprised if they give you a slap., g

Passing privilege: the belief that those who "pass" enjoy greater acceptance in society., e
Passing the ability to be accepted as a member of one's gender of choice. Yes, choice can be a loaded word; none of us "chose" to be who we are, but we do choose how we deal with it. In that sense, it is appropriate for a transgendered person to choose whether to go out as male, female, or in between. We also have strong preferences about which gender we'd rather be, and which gender presentation we are more comfortable with. Depending on the situation, these may or may not be the same., f
Penetrative sex - as to the wisdom of penetrative sex, although anal penetration is the only option open to a transvestite, it is well to remember that it hurts - a lot. If you're masochistic, okay. If you're not, decide whether the role-fulfillment that being penetrated affords you, is worth the pain and - in some cases - worth the anal rips that can occur., g
Pflag: parents and friends of lesbians and gays, and advocacy group that also works on behalf of trans people., e
Phalloplasty : operation for construction of a male genitalia (penis). Some procedures involve flaps of skin taken from the groin and abdomen, but more recent versions of this surgery involve the free forearm flap method of which involves a segment of skin from the forearm being bisected and used to form the penis. This method allows for sensitivity during intercourse in the constructed penis, as well as standing urination., a
Post-op (post-operative): had vaginoplasty. Sometimes used as an objectifying adjective by transfans: "post-ops don't interest me at all.", e
Post-structuralist (related to post-modernist):  poststructuralism denies the possibility of a truly scientific study of "man" or of "human nature", as all belief systems are believed to be socially constructed through language and semiotics. This means that all meanings and intellectual categories are shifting and unstable. The term is relevant for crossdreamers as we from 2011 onwards have seen a few crossdreamers argue that crossdreaming is a social construct based on the psychological development of the individual crossdreamer. Personally i find poststructuralist methods very useful for analyzing the social context of crossdreaming, but since the philosophy has no tools for asserting the effect of biology on mental possesses, it cannot be used to study the interaction between body and mind., b
Pre-op (pre-operative): haven't had vaginoplasty, but plans to. Sometimes used as an objectifying adjective bytransfans: "i only like pre-ops." many people feel that categorizing by surgical status places too much emphasis on a procedure that can be difficult to obtain for many transpeople., e

Quick-change. The art of quick change is essential for transvestites who are likely to have visitors turning up when they are in drag. Having ready a track-suit to slip into in a hurry is a good idea. For the make-up, cleansing wipes or wet-wipes are very good in removing make-up in a hurry. But make sure you check yourself in the mirror before answering the door., g
Rape is a very real aspect of transvestism, when one engages in meeting men for sex. Only a very small percentage of women victims report rape - a far lesser percentage of transvestites report when they have been raped, out of fear of being exposed to friends and family. Quite a few transvestites - me included - have been raped several times., g

Real life test : (rlt or life test) a period of time required of individuals seeking reassignment surgery during which they must live full-time expressing and presenting the gender in and of which they identify as. S.s.t: soc.support.transgender, a usenet newsgroup known more for flame wars than support., e
Secondary sex characteristics : the changes that appear when a person reaches puberty. They include, but are not limited to : facial hair and body hair, muscle mass development, and voice changes for males. Breast development and curves for females. In both genders fertility or ability to reproduce. This also refers to the body changes brought on by taking hrt in cases of breast development, curves and emotional changes for mtf. Body and facial hair, muscle mass, voice depth changes, and agressive tendancy for ftm., a
Separatist transsexual persons, mainly m2f transwomen, who argue they are not part of transgender culture. There are separate schools of separatism: (1) classic transsexuals, who believe that there is a clear and distinct biological difference between being a woman who is born in a man's body and men who get aroused by imagining themselves as women (like crossdressers, autogynephiliacs, transgenderists and feminine gay men). (2) harry benjamin syndrome supporters follow a philopsopy similar to classic transsexuals, but are more prone to gender stereotyping. (3) transkids are transwomen who follow the theories of ray blanchard, considering themselves to be "homosexual transsexuals" and therefore -- apparently -- more feminine than autogynephiliacs. (4) some crossdressers and transgenderists, argue -- based on the philosophy of crossdresser virginia price -- that they have nothing in common with transwomen and gay men. 1,2 and 3 believe the transgender movement is run by crossdressers and autogynephiliacs, while group 4 believes it is run by transwomen. All separatist groups fight each other and whatever remains of the transgender movement. It could have been funny in a monty python life of brian kind of way, hadn't it been for all the suffering this bickering is causing., b
Sex assignment : the declaration, by a doctor, based on what your external genitalia look like, as to what gender you are, and that therefore you are supposed to grow up to exist within a certain set gender role., a

Sex reassignment surgery (srs) the most common term for surgery which changes physiological gender. It is sometimes referred to as corrective surgery, reconciliation surgery, or simply surgery. F2m transsexuals have top surgery (double radical mastectomy) and bottom surgery (hysterectomy and reconstructive surgery)., f

Sexual orientation: a pattern of emotional, romantic and/or sexual attractions to men, women, or both genders. Subcategories are : heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual. Some argue that heterosexual and homosexual are exclusive categories, others that these orientations exist along a continuum that ranges from exclusive heterosexual to exclusive homosexual, including various forms of bisexuality in-between. Some people identify as asexual. To avoid confusion i will often use the words gynephile and androphile in this blog (see gynephile and androphile)., b
Shape shifter : (metamorph) used by some people who choose not to identify as transsexual, to express their belief that they are not changing their gender, but rather changing their body to reflect their inner feelings and gender identity., a
Shapewear : padded panties, girdles, or bras designed to help enhance or produce a female figure. Often used by cross dressers and male-to-female transsexuals., a
She, her, and hers the correct pronouns for referring to any m2f transgendered person. These are always appropriate when the person is presenting as female, and are usually the safe bet when discussion gender issues related to that person. A post-operative transsexual, who is still married to the same woman she married as a male, tells of an incident in which her daughter called from another room for help with her homework. Before she could reply, her wife called back, "don't bother daddy; she's doing her nails.", f
Shemale : derogatory term coined by the porn industry to describe mtf's who keep the genitals they were born with. Incorrectly described as transexuals (note spelling). Transgenderist is now the correct description used by therapists. Most take female hormones and may obtain facial or breast enhancement surgery but almost never srs., a
She-male a genetic male who has physical characteristics of both male and female. This differs from a hermaphrodite in that a she-male has these characteristics by choice (due to hormones), while a hermaphrodite has these characteristics from birth. The term accurately describes most m2f transsexuals during transition, but it is also used (with different implications) for a genetic male working as a show-girl, or otherwise exploiting her physiology., f
Showgirl: someone who performs drag shows, e
Sigmoid vaginoplasty: a controversial vaginoplasty procedure where part of the colon is used., e
Significant other : an individual who is either the girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, or life partner of a transgendered person and who may or may not be supportive of the inner feelings and gender identity of their partner. Some choose to leave their partner for good while others find this new aspect of their partner to be a side they can either learn to cope with or actually support. Some even find the new aspects to be desireable in their partner., a

A person who accepts their opposite gender attraction, and whom identifies as straight. Also used to identify a mtf attracted to a male or a ftm attracted to a female., a
Submission is a big part of a transvestite's persona. The main reason a transvestite wants to dress as a woman is so that he can have passive sex with men. The submissive aspect often doesn't stop there - it stretches to allowing men to do anything to them, because only in that way can they feel fulfilled in the passive female role they have embraced., g
T [noun]: any testosterone regimen., e
T*: an overall abbreviation for transgender, e
Target sex : the desired sex of a transsexual or transgendered person which is opposite of one's biological sex., a

T-friendly: a group or person which accepts transgender people., e
Tg: transgender, e
T-girl: a transgender female. There are mixed feelings regarding the use of this term., e
There are also cultural differences in this term. In north america, the word crossdresser can essentially be the same as transvestite; it needn't necessarily connotate for sexual purposes. However in europe there are clear examples of this connection. For example if a celebrity or politician was found in some sex scandal where they were dressed it would be described as a "crossdressing shocker" rather than a "transvestite shocker". This is why i prefer to split the terms transvestite and crossdresser to refer to two different motivations., c3
Throw shade: to read (as in insult), e
Top surgery : surgery "above the waist." breast auugmentation for the mtf and breast reduction for the ftm. There are many different issues that cause each person to make the decision to either have or not have the surgeries. There are also many difficulties that can occur with these surgeries, which will factor into each individual's decision making process., a
Trachea shave or trache shave: a procedure for removing cartilage from the adam's apple, e
Trannie chaser or tranny chaser: (derogatory) see transfan., b
Trannie: a term used by some tg women to describe other tg women. Often considered offensive if used by a non-tg, e
Tranny / transie: slang terms for transgender or transsexual. It is recommended that health care providers avoid using these terms when speaking with or about transgender patients., d

Tranny-chaser: a derogatory term used to describe someone who is attracted to tgs. Also transie-chaser., e

Trans-: a prefix related to transgender, i.e. A trans-friendly business, e
Transexual: variant spelling of transsexual., e
Transfan:  (also transsensual, admirerer or derogatory: tranny chaser) man with a sexual preference for preoperative male-to-female transsexuals , transgenderists or even crossdressers (see transsexual and transgenderist). Many argue that transfans are closeted homosexuals. I suspect that many of them are crossdreamers., b
Transfolk: also trans folk, a gender-neutral term for trans people collectively, regardless of gender., e
Transgender : those who transgress rigid societal gender norms, and who present a breaking or blurring of cultural stereotypical gender roles. This includes: transsexuals, cross dressers, androgynes, gender benders, shape shifters, and intersexxed individuals. The word describes a category and community, not the individual groups under it's umbrella which are very different from each other. Some intersexed people do not consider themselves transgender. Others who are changing roles and gender through surgery identity with it., a
Transgender community : (gender community) a loose association of individuals and organizations who transgress gender norms in a variety of ways. Celebrating a recently born self awareness, this community is growing fast across all lines. The central ethic of this community is unconditional acceptance of individual exercise of freedoms including gender and sexual identity and orientation., a
Transgender(ed): [adjective] (contoversial term, also tg and trans): (1, common use) umbrella term applied to a variety of individuals, behaviors, and groups involving tendencies to diverge from the normative gender roles connected to their original biological sex, including transsexuals. (2, original use) people who want to live cross-gender without sex reassignment surgery, excluding transsexuals. (3, derogatory) autogynephiliacs and crossdressers, as opposed to "classic transsexuals" or hbs transwomen. I use the word as (1).), b
Transgender: literally "across gender"; sometimes interpreted as "beyond gender"; a community-based term that describes a wide variety of cross-gender behaviors and identities. This is not a diagnostic term, and does not imply a medical or psychological condition. Avoid using this term as a noun: a person is not "a transgender"; they may be a transgender person., d
Transgendered (tg or t*) this is a blanket term for any person whose internal gender identity differs from physiological gender. I have occasionally heard this described as bi-gendered., f
Transgenderist (tg) this describes a person who is living full-time in a new gender role, but does not intend to have surgery. Yes, this double use of the term does get confusing!, f
Transgenderist (controversial term): transgendered people who derive pleasure from and value their genitals as originally developed. Like transsexuals, many are interested in obtaining electrolysis, hormones and even cosmetic surgery to bring their outward presentation in line with their inner sense of self. However, transgenderists are not interested in sex reassignment surgery. Transsexual men and women who for health and other reasons do not obtain srs are not included in this definition. Some deny that transgenderists exist, arguing that they are either misled classic transsexuals or autogynephiliacs. The term must not be confused with "transgender", which means something entirely different., b
Transgenderist: a person who lives as their target gender without wishing to change their target sex., e
Transie: a term used by some transgender women to describe other transgender women. Often considered offensive if used by a non-transgender person., e
Transition this is the process of changing gender role, and also the time period in which the change occurs. The time period starts, more or less, with the decision to change gender, and ends with surgery. The term is also used in the sense of an event, usually when a person begins working in the new gender role., f
Transition: a term meaning the period of time when a transgender or transsexual person is learning how to cross-live socially as a member of the sex category opposite their birth-assigned sex, or is engaged in early hormone use. Some people use this term to describe their medical condition with regard to their gender until they have completed the medical procedures that are relevant for them., d
Transkid (controversial): non-technical term for m2f androphilic transsexual, used mostly for political reasons to have a non-clincal way to refer to androphilic transsexuals as a population rather then a condition. See homosexual transsexual., b
Transman : some ftm's prefer this newer term. See ftm., a
Transparency [noun]: [not congruent with "passing"] [ed. Note: this is a concept proposed by a reader and not a term i've heard used] the state by which a gender-different person possesses passing privilege, but doesn't try to cover the fact that they are gender-different (i.e., not creating false stories about childhood, or subscribing to the "ex-transsexual" ideology), or doesn't exploit their passing privilege to try to fit into a certain social expectation of "women" or "men". Where "passing" infers an effort of "suppressing oneself","acting" or "trying" to be a certain presentation, "having transparency" is simply a state of being oneself and letting any nuance of one's personality come through, regardless whether those personality traits are regarded by some as "feminine" or "masculine". "transparent" [adjective], e
Transpeople (controversial): at this blog used for both transsexuals and crossdreamers/autogynephiliacs and crossdressers., b
Transphile or transophile: someone attracted to transgender women., e
Transphilia: attraction to transgender people., e
Transphilic (also trans-philic): see transfan., b
Transphobia : (gender phobia) the irrational fear of those who are perceived to break and or blur cultural stereotypical gender roles, often assumed to be queer. Expressed as negative feelings, attitudes, actions or behaviors against those perceived as breaking and or blurring cultural stereotypical gender roles., a
Transsexual - someone who feels compelled to turn into a woman - a brave step, for which much courage is needed, considering the risk to general health in later life. Many men are genuinely transsexual, and really do need to change sex for their mental and emotional well-being. There are a great many, however, who want gender reassignment surgery solely in order to indulge their passive sexual predilictions. , g
Transsexual : mtf, ftm, pre-op, post-op, non-op. A person that experiences an intense long term discomfort resulting from the feeling of inappropriateness of their assigned gender role at birth and the discomfort of their body, and whom as a result adapts their gender role and body in order to reflect and be congruent with their gender identity. This may include cross-living, synthesized sex hormones, surgery and other body modification which may or may not lead to the feeling of harmony between a person's body and gender identity., a
Transsexual man: a person who has or has had a biologically female body, but who identifies as/is a woman. Also known as a f2m transsexual or transman. See transsexual and f2m., b
Transsexual woman: a person who has or has had a biologically male body, but who identifies as/is a woman. Also known as a m2f transsexual or transwoman. See transsexual and m2f., b
Transsexual : (also spelled transexual, controversial term): (1) a condition in which an individual identifies with a physical sex that is different from his or her biological one. (2) a person who has undergone sex reassignment treatment and surgery (srs). The main controversy regarding this term is based on the idea that some argue that there are two types of transsexual m2f women: (1) classic transsexuals or hbs women (see classic transsexual women and harry benjamin syndrome) and (2) autogynephiliacs (see autogynephilia). Some use the term exclusively for classic transsexual women, some for both, and some for all who have had srs. I use it for both classical pre-op and post-op transsexuals and for crossdreamers and autogynephiliacs who have changed sex., b
Transvestite- a person who is more comfortable when dressed as a woman. Normally, he retains a firm grasp of reality, realising that he is not an actual woman - although has does have close contact with his feminine side, which transvestism helps him express. There is nothing wrong with being a transvestite - it is a thing to be proud of. A transvestite regards himself as a canvass, doing whatever he can to turn himself into his idea of a beautiful woman., g
Transvestite: a psychiatric term applied to male-bodied people who wear female clothing, periodically, episodically, for sexual gratification, and may experience significant distress. Some people who crossdress will use this term as a self-referent, but others reject its potentially stigmatizing psychiatric/diagnostic meaning, or use the term crossdresser in its place because they do not dress for sexual gratification or feel distress about the behavior., d
Transwoman : some mtf's prefer this newer term. See mtf., a
Truck: synonym for brick, e
Ts: transsexual, e
Tuck the technique of hiding male genitals so that they do not cause an embarrassing bulge under female clothing. A good tuck is effective in even the tightest of female clothes, such as leotards and bathing suits., f
Tuck(ing) : the act or process of hiding male genitalia by tucking them back between the legs., a
Tv: transvestite-- an outdated term for crossdresser., e
Two-spirit : a term for both same gender loving and transgendered people that emerged from various native american traditions. The dineh (navaho) word is nadleehe one who is transformed, the lakota (sioux) as winkte, the mohave as alyha, the zuni as lhamana, the omaha as mexoga, the aleut and kodiak as achnucek, the zapotec as ira' muxe, the cheyenne as he man eh., a
Twr: transsexual women's resources, the name of a website on medical issues for transwomen, maintained by anne lawrence., e
Ultimate acceptance is when a transvestite can go shopping in a supermarket without attracting a second glance. To achieve this, he has to literally leave his penchant for dressing like a slut at home, and carefully dress-down, donning the ordinary type of clothing that most women wear every day. Wearing the absolute minimum of make-up is also a good idea., g
Unclockable: describes someone who is accepted without question or suspicion in her chosen gender., e
Vaginoplasty : in cases of transgendered individuals this is a surgical method of creating of a neo vagina. There are two main methods with use of doner tissue from the penis and the scrotum in both cases. And a third way which is used in only the most extreme cases. The first entails the following generally used method. After first incisions in the genitalia the right spermatic cord is ligated (bound so as not to bleed) and clamped. The primary incision is continued up the ventral (lower) side of the shaft of the penis. The anterior (top) flap is then developed from the skin of the penis. The urethra is dissected from the shaft. The corpora cavernosa (two chambers in the penis which run the length of the penis and are filled with spongy tissue which blood flows into filling the open spaces in the spongy tissue to create an erection.) Are separated to assure a minimal stump. Next, the anterior (top) flap is perforated to position the urethral meatus. (urethra). The skin flaps are sutured and placed in position in the vaginal cavity. The second method was created by dr. Suporn watanyusakul in chonburi, thailand and is known as the chonburi pouch method or the suporn technique. Dr. Suporn's method is quite different from the typical sexual reassignment surgery as he does not use the penile inversion method. Instead, he constructs the vaginal vault (canal), with scrotal skin and uses the penile tissues for a labia, clitoris, and other external features. A full thickness inguinal (groin crease) skin graft is used for the vaginal lining in rare cases where inadequate scrotal skin is available. Dr. Suporn's method generally yields a deeper neovagina than the more standard penile inversion technique. After either method is completed the neo vagina is packed to insure it keeps its shape as the patient begins the healing process. Some individuals swear that suporns technique is superior, others feel the penial inversion method is. The third style of vaginoplasty is called colovaginoplasty and involves a cutting away and resecting of the cut ends of the sigmoid colon. This leaves a freed section of the sigmoid colon for use in forming a vaginal lining., a
Vanity is a danger for transvestites. It is well to remember that just because one thinks one looks good in the mirror, doesn't necessarily mean that other people will look on you as just a man in drag., g
Vgv: visibly gender-variant, a term used by some to describe anyone whose appearance or actions do not match their culture's arbitrary expectations for people of their sex., e
Wannabes - are usually crossdressers - not even genuine transvestites - who have read somewhere the phrase "born in the wrong body" and adopt it as their own. Essentially, they are just sad individuals who are incapable of sustaining a normal relationship, and who identify themselves with transgendered issues whilst doing so behind their wife's back., g
Wbw: womyn-born-womyn, a term used by some to exclude transsexuals from the definition of femininity., e
Woodwork the place where transsexuals disappear into, after surgery. After transition and surgery, most transsexuals want to get on with their lives, and they leave the gender community. This is not necessarily a trip back into the closet, as a post-operative transsexual no longer has a mismatch between physiological and mental gender. However, some m2f post-ops choose not to disclose their past. Srs for m2f transsexuals has been perfected to the point that most people, with the possible exception of gynecologists, cannot tell the difference between a post-op and a genetic female., f
Woodworking (or stealth woodworking): for a transsexual to live in a manner that conceals her or his past sex., b
Wpath: in 2006, hbigda began implementing a name change to world professional association for transgender health., e
X marks the spot. Just as women do, transvestites have facial imperfections. These, they try to cover-up with excessive make-up, which leads to totally the wrong effect. A much better alternative is to use concealer sticks, and just dab them on the offending spot or smear. They work really well., g
Xd: see crossdreaming (also used as an abbreviation for crossdressing), b
Youthful looks are what most transvestites try to attain, often by the use of blonde wigs and clothes normally only worn by teenagers. This is not a good idea, as the effect will be totally unrealistic. It is far better for a transvestite to look and dress his actual age. In that way he will pass much more easily. As it happens, most transvestites look far younger when they are in drag than their actual age anyway., g
Zap: to get hair removed, esp. With electrolysis., e
Ze : a newer pronoun used by some to refer to a person in place of she or he when talking about an individual whoose gender does not fit into a specific category., a
Zestfulness is often adopted by transvestites when dressed. Whilst this is not harmful in itself, it does tend to detract from the femininity that is the transvestite's goal. Most real women don't walk around in a manic zestful state, unless they are on something they shouldn't be. Sedateness is a much more realistic goal., g
